{"id":13929,"date":"2016-06-29T15:22:30","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T15:22:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kaycasto.com\/?p=13929"},"modified":"2016-06-29T15:22:30","modified_gmt":"2016-06-29T15:22:30","slug":"practicing-social-responsibility-during-natural-disasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaycasto.com\/practicing-social-responsibility-during-natural-disasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Practicing Social Responsibility During Natural Disasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nearly everyone in West Virginia has been impacted as a result of last week\u2019s <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/weather\/news\/severe-weather-flooding-west-virginia-immersive-slideshow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">unprecedented storms <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">and subsequent flooding<\/span><\/a><\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0 Some spots in West Virginia saw more than a foot of rain in a matter of hours.\u00a0 The impact of the\u00a0string of storms\u00a0is staggering.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen images which tug on our collective heartstrings, as some folks who had little in the way of worldly possessions now seek to move forward with even less.\u00a0 As West Virginians, when we see our brethren struggling, our instinct is to charge in and help every way we know how.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The problem with our instinct to help is that recovery efforts, which are not coordinated with emergency personnel, run the risk of impeding those personnel from performing their duties.\u00a0 Even worse, Good Samaritans may find themselves in peril as many roads in flood-impacted counties remain impassable.\u00a0 <b>Long story short: don\u2019t go \u201csightseeing\u201d in impacted areas.\u00a0 You run the risk of hurting yourself or others.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So what do we do?<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 Those folks in Nicholas, Kanawha and Greenbrier Counties who were impacted by the flood are eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (\u201cFEMA\u201d).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.disasterassistance.gov\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">Click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to apply online or call 1-800-621-FEMA to apply over the phone.\u00a0 For those not directly impacted by the flood, you can <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">make donations<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/local\/west-virginia\">The Red Cross<\/a>, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unionmission.com\/flood-relief-west-virginia\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">Union Mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adoptcharleston.com\/index.php\/give\/wish-list\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">Kanawha Charleston Humane Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mountainmission.com\/\">Mountain Mission<\/a> (among many others)<\/span>.<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0While monetary donations allow professional organizations to adapt to changing needs on a daily basis, there is an active call for help to provide healthier varieties of non-perishable food and beverages, infant supplies, and pet products – particularly dry\u00a0dog food.
